Leaders from the City of San Diego departments of Engineering & Capital Projects (E&CP), General Services (DGS), and Sustainability & Mobility (SuMo) will discuss the City’s goal to bring municipal buildings and vehicles to zero emissions by 2035. They will share recent initiatives supporting that goal. Learn about efforts to secure buy-in and approval for setting the zero emissions goal and SuMo’s steps to establish policies and implement invative programs to leverage a wide variety of funding to help offset the costs of electrification. Learn about DGS’ efforts to electrify the City’s fleet of 4,500+ vehicles, including electrification assessments on operations yards and EV purchasing plans. Hear from E&CP about recent modifications to the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and the process a project goes through to ensure that multiple elements of the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP), such as municipal building electrification and fleet charging, are considered. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Discuss what it will take for the eighth largest city in the US to decarbonize its municipal facilities and operations.
• Identify the steps necessary to electrify a municipal fleet of more than 4,500 vehicles.
• Identify various methods to fund and procure capital improvements that advance climate goals and GHG reductions.
