One of San Francisco Public Works’ most under-the-radar initiatives is also one of its most meaningful: workforce development. This initiative partners with local nonprofit organizations to provide opportunities for people who face barriers to employment. Those who have benefited from this program include teens who are in and out of school, formerly incarcerated men and women, people who are homeless, ex-gang members, and other residents who have little or no job experience. Through on-the-job-training, help with resume writing, interview preparation and education, the program emphasizes the importance of job-readiness and prepares individuals for stable and productive income opportunities that benefit the community. Among the work they do is landscape maintenance, street cleaning and staffing the Pit Stop public toilet program. Without their work, Public Works would not be able to meet the public’s growing demands to keep the city clean and green. In addition, the job experience and workforce training can lead to permanent employment with the city, putting the workers on more stable financial ground and provide Public Works with a trained labor pool. It’s a win-win proposition.

Learning Objectives:

1. Collaborate with nonprofit partners to meet constituent demands.

2. Develop programs that benefit individuals and the larger community.

3. Prepare people facing barriers to employment for the workforce.
