The ASCE National Infrastructure Scorecard tells the story of underinvestment throughout our country. The infrastructure people see daily is failing due to a lack of resources. However, the infrastructure underground is out of sight, out of mind for most taxpayers/ratepayers. This underinvestment and the lack of community engagement means our roads, bridges, sewers, etc., will continue to age, deteriorate, and eventually fail, leaving future generations to address these issues. The presenters will use two case studies, the Overland Park, KS Infrastructure Advisory Committee and the Lee’s Summit, MO Fiscal Impact Model to demonstrate how to build support for continued and additional investment. Using storytelling and infographics, participants will learn how to analyze problems, describe the needs, and present options to community members, planning commissioners, and elected bodies. Participants will leave with practical tools and a path forward to better-maintained infrastructure today and for future generations. After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Work with community members to determine the level of infrastructure maintenance supported.
• Communicate the correlation between financial sustainability, long-term infrastructure costs, and community resilience.
• Build support for the appropriate level of resources to fund infrastructure maintenance long-term.
