In the current labor market, potential employees are looking at more than just money when selecting an employer. When hiring skilled heavy equipment operators (skid steer, front-end loader, backhoe, etc.), it is often very difficult to hire an operator from private industry because municipalities cant match pay. This presentation will cover how the City of Austin Public Works Department built its own in-house heavy equipment training program. This program t only teaches the operation of equipment but also is a transformative process for the students as they learn to master a highly coveted skill. The results include efficiency and productivity and are a major boost to the morale of employees, too. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Identify why a public works department should invest in heavy equipment training.
• Identify the required elements of a heavy equipment training program.
• Determine how to build performance assessments that demonstrate competency in operating a piece of equipment.
