In today’s world, effective communication of infrastructure’s importance and associated budgetary concerns to elected officials is paramount. Unfortunately, many individuals are hesitant to venture beyond their comfort zones to convey challenges compellingly. In this session, we will explore the wisdom of multi-termed Mayor Harold Weinbrecht (Town of Cary, rth Carolina), past APWA President Keith Pugh, and City Manager Sean Stegall (Town of Cary). The trio will share valuable insights on how to engage with decision-makers and elected officials in a way that truly makes a difference. Their discussions will highlight the art of discerning the most critical information for elected bodies, what data to use or t use, and the utilization of storytelling techniques to establish meaningful connections with key decision-makers. The session will also provide strategies for delivering unwelcome news to the decision-makers in ways that resonate with them while navigating budget constraints. It will emphasize that consistent engagement is crucial to understanding local dynamics. At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees will be equipped with the necessary tools to become proactive and impactful advocates for their Public Works department.
