Gathering and managing accurate asset data can be challenging, yet it’s crucial for tasks like preventative maintenance, service improvements, and capital planning. Often, this data is collected sporadically for convenience or as specific needs arise. However, new remote sensing techniques and AI/ML processing offer efficient ways to comprehensively collect asset inventories. In this session, we delve into actual case studies from agencies that have recently executed jurisdiction-wide asset inventory projects. These projects encompass various assets, from traffic control devices and pavement assessments to sidewalks and stormwater infrastructure. Importantly, we highlight the rationales behind pushing these projects forward, including cost justifications, operational enhancements, and other considerations for evaluating such initiatives.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Establish cost justifications for data collection and asset inventory initiatives.
• Recognize how GIS-enabled asset data is being operationalized in modern systems and programs.
• Evaluate current data capture and analytics approaches and their challenges.
