An update from the 2018 APWA Emerging Leaders Class Academy (ELA) Project Class XI of the APWA’s Emerging Leaders Academy (ELA) was a diverse group of 16 individuals. As part of their final project, the 2018 ELA group used public surveys and personal experiences to determine the major challenges organizations face recruiting and retaining individuals to fill the growing need for highly qualified personnel. This presentation will provide an update into their continued focus into the socio-economic issues in today’s society that directly affect the organizations serving the public. They will discuss the generational differences, lack of diversity in the workforce, public perception, and technological deficiencies that are contributing to the declining interest in public works careers.
