The Americans with Disabilities act impacted the role of civil engineers through regulated standards for accessible design, kwn as the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. In addition, state and local governments have prescribed standards that provide greater accessibility than the federal standard. The standards include site accessibility requirements, so anyone looking to develop a site would do well to recognize the impact of these standards. Therefore, the engineering team must understand these requirements when designing development or redevelopment projects. In addition, under federal regulations, when parks and recreation facilities are built or altered, they must comply with the Standards for Accessible Design. This training will cover the specific accessibility standards for accessible routes that connect to all accessible facilities in the park, sports areas, playgrounds, and other amenities. This session will review the requirements for exterior paths and related issues for providing accessible walkways, ramps, stairways, and maneuvering clearances. The session will also address exterior routes for site arrival points, connections to transit stops, and public streets and sidewalks. The presenters will highlight some of the site’s challenges, like dealing with steep slopes and existing facilities, and best practices for planning, designing, and preparing civil plans and details, thus ensuring that all the site work meets the required standards. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Identify every specific applicable code and standard for site development.
• Apply the design parameters for sites, accessible routes, curb ramps, stairways, and parking spaces.
• Produce construction documents and facilitate the inspection process that ensures compliance with accessibility standards.
