This presentation will describe the outcomes of the presenter’s spring/summer Jennings-Randolph study tour of New Zealand. The tour aimed to identify what New Zealand public works and planning practitioners and educational establishments are working on in the broad area of developing holistic, sustainable land use plans and what individual elements might usefully be incorporated in such a plan. The approximately four-week study tour began at IPWEA NZ’s 2023 conference in Rotorua in June 2023 and included meetings with public works and planning professionals in major cities such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Recognize the need to develop sustainable land use plans to combat ongoing global warming and associated climate change effectively.
• Consider the key roles of transportation and water resources engineers in helping shape a sustainable land use plan, including their need to incorporate location-specific measures upfront in developing comprehensive land use plans.
• Compare and contrast current sustainability strategies in New Zealand and the US.
