Transcendental leadership is the epitome of leadership. It places the leader’s focus on the service to those around them and those external to the organization for which they work. The journey to this level is an evolutionary process of exploration and learning, always looking to improve and to become a better version of themselves. It is said that “It is a wise man who kws he isn’t.” Continual improvement of the self is sought to ensure they are providing the best possible service to those around them for whom they work and serve. There is thing selfish about this journey as the transcendental leader is t evolving for their own goals but to ensure they provide the best opportunity for others to evolve. The speaker of this session has been a part of numerous training sessions as either an attendee, facilitator, or mentor. The most impactful of these was as a mentor to the APWA Emerging Leaders Academy. During his time as a mentor for the ELA, he realized he, too, was learning during each class. Even as a mentor, he would complete each class a better version of himself, meaning he found a strength or weakness and developed ways to improve upon strengths or mitigate those negative aspects. Sharing these lessons evolved into creating a Leadership Development Class and a Principles of Leadership class at his local agency to help others realize their potential as leaders.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Define the difference between transactional, transformational, and transcendental leadership theories and how these theories evolved.
• Build a framework for their leadership development journey.
• Recognize the variety of differing leadership models, from which they can develop a personalized version for their own agency.
