Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP)
The Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), which was signed into law on August 10, 2005, established the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) as a core Federal-aid program. The overall purpose of this program is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads through the implementation of infrastructure-related highway safety improvements.

Read MoreThe Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)'s INVEST identifies characteristics of sustainable highways and provides information and techniques to help agencies and organizations integrate sustainability best practices into highway and other transportation projects. Scoring in a number of categories also allows agencies and consultants to compare traditional designs against more progressive designs and construction approaches. This system is voluntary and has completed a successful pilot project phase.
